Practice Summary

Michael Sullivan has a particular expertise in cases involving commercial fraud, banking and finance, and energy and natural resources. He has a substantial practice in international commercial arbitration, including investment treaty arbitrations.  As well as major international law firms, he provides advice directly to multinational corporations, state entities and overseas governments, often working directly with in-house teams.  He has also appeared before overseas courts, including in Zambia and Tanzania.

Michael’s work for the Republic of Zambia in a landmark case involving State corruption as well as defending claims brought by vulture funds arising from the acquisition of Sovereign Debt has been described by Legal Business as "generally considered of paramount importance to the whole African continent". Michael subsequently advised on the structure and drafting of the Debt Relief (Developing Countries) Act 2010.

Michael acted for the Republic of Zambia in the substantial, high profile and related Chancery Division, Commercial Court and ICC proceedings arising out of the endemic corruption perpetrated by the Government of Zambia presided over by the notorious Dr. Frederick Chiluba.

Michael also recently acted for H.E. President Museveni, President of Uganda in a claim brought against him in a contractual dispute in the High Court. The matter concerned issues of Sovereign Immunity and proper service of proceedings.
